The camera work by Andrew Lesnie was stellar as it cut between the different sides of Smeagol - the good and the evil. In the now-iconic monologue from The Two Towers, the multiple personalities of the hobbit - Gollum and Smeagol - argue with each other about their past sins. In easily one of the most popular scenes from the beloved The Lord of the Rings trilogy, we are introduced to two facets of the warped Smeagol, one of the early hobbits who undergoes a drastic transformation after possessing the all-powerful and all-consuming ‘one ring.’ In his over two-minute monologue, we see how the ring has irreparably twisted the physical and mental facilities of the once healthy creature. However, in the 2002 Oscar-nominated film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, this feat was achieved, and finally rendered on to the screen by the brilliant Andy Serkis. But no one could have imagined seeing these subjects being represented in an accurate manner via a digitally created character. And these issues have been shown in various art forms before. Tackling mental health illness can be complicated, especially if you have no emotional support.
